Africa Accelerates in Energy Efficiency: A Lever for Hospitals

According to theIEA (2024), energy efficiency in Africa improved by 1.6% per year between 2022 and 2024, more than double the annual average recorded between 2010 and 2019.

Countries such as Gabon, Côte d’Ivoire, and Rwanda achieved annual efficiency gains of at least 4 % during the 2010–2019 decade, while Togo andEthiopia reached 4.5% and 5.7%respectively. These results show that, despite structural challenges, Africa is gradually succeeding in making better use of every kilowatt consumed.

Why this progress is crucial for African hospitals

Healthcare facilities are major energy consumers:

  • Vital equipment (incubators, ventilators, oxygen concentrators),
  • Cold chain for vaccines and medicines,
  • Operating rooms requiring air conditioning, sterilization, and continuous lighting.

Practical measures to improve energy efficiency

Inspired by global best practices (Optimum Energy, American H&HM), several simple solutions adapted to the African context can be implemented:

  • Smart LED lighting, cutting electricity consumption by up to 50% compared to traditional bulbs.
  • Efficient air conditioning and ventilation systems, ensuring both comfort and safety in critical areas such as operating rooms.
  • Cold chain optimization with modern equipment that consumes less energy while guaranteeing vaccine preservation.
  • Staff training to encourage energy-conscious behaviors (turning off unused devices, adjusting equipment settings).

A step toward more resilient hospitals

Improving energy efficiency is not just a technical issue: it is a condition for reliable, accessible, and sustainable healthcare. Every percentage point gained in efficiency contributes to:

  • Relieving hospital budgets,
  • Reducing dependence on fossil fuels,
  • Saving lives through continuous power for medical equipment.

With the current momentum, Africa holds a powerful lever to build modern hospitals that combine quality healthcare with energy efficiency..
